Summer is well on its way in the northern hemisphere, which means it’s time to start thinking about traveling south!
Why not consider Cartagena? Direct flights from New York and Miami. This vivacious city is the pulsating belle of Colombia. With the country’s worst tumultuous days are long gone, Cartagena is now in the midst of a cultural renaissance. There’s no doubt that the city has gotten its groove back–from dance festivals, street guitarists and fusion restaurants, Cartagena is as lively a destination as Spain or France.
What’s there to do?
Explore the historic district, with its 300 year old colonial buildings, cobbled alleys, and balconies adorned in bougainvillea. Enjoy a cocktail or sumptuous meal outdoors in one of the area’s European cafes. Go salsa dancing at one of the many lively clubs. Visit the El Centro streets, where women peddle delicious fruits like bananas, coconuts, and nisperos–a soft, peach-like fruit that hints vaguely of chocolate. Art lovers should stop by the Gold Museum, a Baroque mansion turned exhibition of gold that were hidden from the Conquistadors. Up for a bit of shopping? Look for unusual handicrafts along Calle Santo Domingo and Calle San Juan de Dios.
From Cartagena as your base, embark on several day trips to the Rosario Islands, Totumo Volcano, or Playa Blanca. Or delve deeper into Colombia and fly over to nearby Bogota and coffee plantations.
For small groups to Colombia, nobody does it better than Alexander & Roberts (previously General Tours), who organizes multiday excursions throughout the country.
