This week we’re featuring three of our favorite South Pacific destinations—Tahiti, Fiji, and Cook Islands. Our WIT Agents have traveled these regions extensively and love any chance to chat about them!

Next spot on our idyllic tour through Polynesia is Fiji, the small island nation located in the South Pacific. With over 300 magnificent islands, there’s no shortage of white sandy beaches, swaying palm trees and pristine oceans. While Fiji is a year round destination, the best time of visit is from May to October—clearer water, less rainfall, lower humidity—and lower risk of cyclones!

Fiji has enough varied landscape to captivate any traveler: from rainforest and orchid gardens, to dark caves and coral reefs. Backpack through the jungle and the national parks, go whitewater rafting, join a local guide on a spelunking trip. Head out to the water and learn to jet ski and parasail. Want an adventure that will give you goosebumps? Participate in shark feeding or swim with giant manta rays. Prefer a more languid vacation? Relax by the pool, indulge in an oil massage, have a destination wedding! Fiji is also renowned for its cruises, on lines or yachts. Sail from Nadi to the sandy beaches of the Mamanucas or the Yasawas.

The Great Astrolabe Reef that surrounds Kadavu Island is one of the largest barrier reefs in the world. Here you can spot marlin, sharks, giant trevally, mahi mahi, snapper and manta ray. Varying from 25-32 °C (77-89 °F), with an average visibility of 25 meters, the reef is a main attraction for scuba divers.

Fiji’s culture is a diverse tapestry of indigenous, Indian, European, Chinese and other influences. Though English is the official language, native village chiefs still exist, and public holidays include Diwali, Easter and the Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday. Learn about the ancient culture that still thrives today—watch or learn how to weave mats, masi hats, or baskets—or listen to native storytelling, song and dance. Dine on traditional Fiji food like taro, sweet potatoes, coconut and fish. Delicious Indian spices such as turmeric, cumin, and chilies have contributed to the unique taste to Fijian cuisine.
